The Founding Inquiry/Why I Started This Channel
Modern life is producing something that is not thriving. Over a billion people carry diagnosed mental health conditions; nearly half of Gen Z has a formal psychiatric diagnosis; disengagement is the modal experience of work. This is the founding video of the channel — my case for why the narrative of perpetual progress conceals a species-level mismatch between the human animal and its current habitat, and why the fix is not more of what produced the problem.
About the Companion
This is the paper that inaugurated the inquiry. It names an unease — the sense that modern life, however comfortable, is producing something that is not thriving — and works through what that unease is tracking. Drawing on data (over a billion people with diagnosed mental health conditions, nearly half a generation on formal psychiatric diagnoses, disengagement as the modal experience of work), the paper argues that the narrative of perpetual progress conceals a species-level mismatch between the human animal and its current habitat; that "the leavers" — the pre-modern peoples still living outside the mismatch — carry knowledge that is not nostalgia but data; and that the radical shift required is not another upgrade of the system that produced the problem. The experience of modern life — the chronic fatigue, the meaningless work, the loneliness embedded in crowds, the accumulation of things that do not satisfy, the vague but persistent sense that something essential has been lost — is not a regional complaint. It is a species complaint. The data confirm what the body already knows. Over one billion people worldwide are living with a diagnosed mental health condition. Nearly half of the entire Gen Z generation — the first generation raised fully inside the digital, hyperconnected, algorithmically curated version of modern life — have received a formal psychiatric diagnosis. Depression is the leading cause of disability on the planet, and it is growing. Suicide has overtaken car accidents as a cause of death among middle-aged Americans. These are not the metrics of a species at its apex. They are the metrics of a species under severe and sustained stress. And yet the official response is consistent across every context. Work harder. Take the pill. Buy the product. Wait for the next technological breakthrough. Progress will fix what progress has broken. The cure for modernity is more modernity.
